Alvin Mushkatel is a recognized expert in risk and hazard management and has completed numerous studies in the area of emergency response planning and public safety assessments. He provides specialized training programs in public safety, institutional and regulatory issues, and hazard minimization to government and private institutions.

His areas of expertise include fiscal impact assessments, natural hazards mitigation, land use policy and housing. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and numerous state and local government agencies.

Mushkatel has served on a number of national Academy of Science/National Research Council committees that have investigated issues surrounding the destruction of chemical weapons, and various management aspects of the nation's radioactive waste program. He has written several books and numerous articles on these topics and has served on advisory committees of the National Research Council.
